Private Tour of the Heard Museum and Matisse and the Yup’ik Mask Exhibit

January 11, 2019 @ 8:30 AM - 5:00 PM

$17.00

Private Docent-led tour of Matisse and Yup’ik mask at the Heard Museum in Phoenix

Here is a brief description by our own Jerry Cowdrey, and extraordinary Docent :  The exhibit is about Matisse and his drawings of a mask that he got the idea from a book with photographs of Inuit people’s faces. The great part of the exhibit, at least to me is the Yup’ik mask. There are pairs that have not been together for 100 years and one pair that has not been shown in the USA for 45 years. The exhibit has taken three years to gather the masks and they are from New York, the Smithsonian, the Hearst Museum, the Matisse Museum, and some other museums. This is the only museum in the world that this exhibit will be shown; after the show the pieces will go back to the museums were they came from and some probably never to be seen again as they may go in storage at the museums.

Details: This tour will be PRIVATE, and only for club members and their guests.  Jerry is willing to lead folks on a brief general overview  tour of the Heard after lunch.

Details:  We will meet at 8:30am sharp, section 16 in the RH Johnson parking lot to assemble cars for carpooling. You must have $17 cash if you are a senior (reduced from $26 due to Jerry’s discount) so we can buy all of the tickets at once and promptly start the tour at 10am.  You will give your admission to the driver of your car. Please bring exact change, and NO CHECKS. Also bring $2 or so to help share gasoline costs.

Lunch is on your own. Some may want to eat at the museum restaurant (quite good food)    https://heard.org/visit/dine/  or another nearby restaurant.
